What is Parkinson’ Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a disorder caused by the loss of the nerve cells in the brain, responsible for the production of a chemical called dopamine.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the nerve cells in the brain gradually breakdown or die. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) symptoms are as a result of loss of neurons that produce Dopamine. When the level of dopamine decreases it causes an abnormal brain activity. Hence, leading to impaired movement and other PD symptoms.

Parkinson’s Disease symptoms worsen as the condition progresses.

In 2018, a study by the Parkinson’s Foundation found that the prevalence of Parkinson’s disease is increasing. By 2030, it’s estimated that 1.2 million Americans will be living with the disease.

Stage 2.

Consequently, symptoms gradually increase. They occurre on both sides of the body (bilateral involvement). Daily tasks become difficult to perform.

Stage 3.

This stage is considered as the moderate stage/mid stage where the symptoms are mostly characterized by loss of balance and slowness of movement. This impairs normal functioning with the falls becoming common.

Stage 4.

The disease becomes more severe with the symptoms worsening. The symptoms of PD are severely disabling. The patient might require the help of relatives or friends. The patient becomes noticeably incapacitated.

Stage 5.

Lastly, in this stage the patient falls when standing or turning. Stiffness in legs, may freeze or stumble when walking. Similarly, may experience non motor symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions.
